Just wanted to give you all an update on FCA's first baseball Day of Champions held at the Univ of Tampa.....it was stinkin awesome! We had a great turnout of 12 schools, with a total of 110 aspiring big leaguers. The instructors that came out did an incredible job. We began the day with guest speaker and long time coach Pop Cuesta stressing the importance of work ethic and commitment, followed by Mets scout Les Parker sharing with the kids what he looks for in potential major leaguers. After getting a little inspired, I was actually contemplating getting back in the game, we broke into working groups. Behnid the plate Troy Caradona(NYY) and Kyle Anson(NYY) worked the catchers; Gil Patterson(OAK), Danny Borrell(NYY), Brian Reith(MIL) and Neiman Nix(SEA) handled the pitchers; Aaron Ledesma(TB), Brett Groves(KC) worked the infielders; Aaron Holbert(CLE) tightened up the base stealers; Jason Romano(HOU), Dave Wrigley(PITT) and Luke Wrenn(AZ) took care of the outfielders; Darnell Coles(WASH), Les Parker(NYM) and Dave Kent(NYY) locked in the hitters and Larry Mayol(NYM ATC) along with Joel Kennedy(PHI ATC) informed the athletes on the importance of maintenance and conditioning. Eighteen current or former big leaguers coaching 110 high school players while about 50 parents and coaches watch.
During the camp, Jeff Duke of FCA's coaching ministry, came over from Orlando to hold a coaching seminar. We only had five coaches but they were the five coaches that were suppose to be there. Three have requested a follow up visit with the intent to add a chaplain program to their team practice. I was told he did a tremendous job. Thank you Jeff! Also during the camp, Danny Borrells father Jim shared with the parents his experiences of raising a ball player that went on to play college baseball at Wake and then to pro ball with the Yankees and Oakland for eight years.
After we finished up the working stations, we preceded to have a round of home run derby. However, the UT baseball field was a little too deep for our guys. We determined the winner by who hit the most warning track balls. The winner of the Dicks Sporting Goods certificate was Juan Fontela out of Leto. We will blame the poor display of power on it being too early in the season.
We wrapped up the camp with 40 pizzas, Gatorade, testimonies and the gospel. Aaron Ledesma shared his powerful story of how God drastically changed his life three years ago and former Liberty University firstbaseman Kelly Knouse got after it in his gospel presentation. We are sure over 180 people heard the great news of Jesus Christ and His saving power and as the program came to a close six players and two parents indicated a commitment to Christ for salvation. Praise God for this event and FCA!
Thank you Glen, George and John "the super" Byczek for all your help.
For His Glory, Sam Marsonek
Some plant, some water, some pull weeds and sometimes we get to see the increase. What a way to start 2009. Thank you Jesus.
